Solo & Chamber Music

"Ships" - Commissioned by the New Movement Project

The inspiration for “Ships” began with the music of British Saxophonist Andy Sheppard, whose 2015 album Surrounded By Sea features a rich melodic and harmonic palate and evocative sonic textures. When I first discovered the album, I would drop everything just to listen and let the music create vivid pictures of the sounds I was hearing.

One particular image that stuck with me was one of a peaceful harbor viewed from a cliffside at night— moonlight dancing on the water and illuminating the ships docked at shore, while the sound incessant waves droned on in the background. I was so struck by this image that I decided to translate that mental picture back into sound. The result was this tune, “Ships.”

The piece explores a few different moods, ranging from the same sense of tranquility and stillness that originally inspired the piece, to the pulsing energy of a ship at sea rocking from the wind and high waves. Staying true to the inspiration of jazz musician Andy Sheppard, the piece features a jazz-oriented instrumentation, featuring trio of horns backed by piano, bass and drums. I believe that the power and subtlety of this ensemble aids in capturing the spirit of the seascape in my mind’s eye, and hopefully does justice the original musical works that inspired this image as well.
